When is it safe to go in a sauna/jacuzzi/steam room after facelift and why is it NOT wise to go in a sauna or steam room?

The tissues are still healing and any kind of trauma, heat or mechanical can have adverse effects. The last thing you would want is to have a set back after you have made an investment for a face lift. We typically recommend waiting at least 3-4 weeks prior to resuming activities like these. Spa treatments like sauna, jacuzzi and steam baths are very relaxing but not a good idea soon after facial. Increased temperature cause vasodilitation, which means the blood vessels get larger and can cause more swelling. Also the increased heat is not helpful for the healing process. I generally recommend waiting 4-6 weeks before these types of treatments.

We generally advice our patients to avoid closed water contact (pool, ocean, Jacuzzi) for 3-4 weeks to avoid infection of wounds. I would recommend avoiding sauna for 4-6 weeks; excessive heat may create late bleeding which will compromise your result. It is always best to discuss issues like these with your surgeon to avoid any conflicting information. Good luck.  

Thank you for your question. I suggest patients avoid the steam room, jacuzzi, and sauna for about 6 weeks after surgery, including after a facelift. These actives can increase swelling and the risk of infection. 

We typically advise patients to wait 3 weeks after surgery before using any saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs or bath tubs. These modalities typically have high bacterial loads and we do not want any increased risk of infection in the post op period. The heat with each of these can also increase swelling in the post op period.
If there are any healing irregularities (wounds, etc), we guide patients specifically in these cases about when they can return to these activities. 

It can do a lot of harm. Increasing the temperature will increase the blood flow to your face which will increase swelling and could even cause bleeding. That could result in a second trip to surgery. As time passes the risk decreases but you should clear  anything like that with your surgeon. I had a severe bleed in a patient a full week after surgery, so it can happen.

Once your wounds are completely healed you may use a jacuzzi or steam room. In the 30 to 45 days postoperative the new wounds are vulnerable to bacterial invasion from the possible bacteria brewing in the jacuzzi or steam room. When your wounds are completely healed, at the OK of your surgeon you may enjoy your Jacuzzi again. Happy new year and good luck...
