Must I see a breast surgeon to remove axillary breast tissue in one armpit?

Question

Going for a breast reduction, but plastic surgeon will not remove Axillary Breast tissue. He says there are too many lymph nodes in that area and recommends that I see a breast surgeon. This means a second surgery and potentially more expense. Has anyone heard of this? I live in a smaller city so not many doctors.

In many cases plastic surgeons are willing and able to remove axillary breast tissue.  It is important to understand the risks associated with it so you can make an informed decision, but that is true of every surgery.  You may want to visit with a few board certified plastic surgeons near you to hear varying opinions.

Why your surgeon doesn’t want to remove the axillary breast tissue could be many reasons   Fear of complications, lack of experience or insurance not paying extra. Or maybe the axillary breast tissue is not large enough to justify doing it. You can always get a second opinion.

most plastic surgeons are able to remove axillary breast tissue. I understand your concern. It is best however that you consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine whether you can have several aesthetic surgeries in one session, as this would depend on various factors including but not limited to your general health condition, the type of anesthesia that will be used, and the type of surgeries that will be performed among others.

Hi and welcome to our forum!In today's legal climate, surgeons do not wish to work outside of their comfort zone. As the axilla has a complex anatomy of nerves, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and muscle, some surgeons may shy away from the procedure. However, these structures reside deeply and most will perform the procedures concomitantly. You may wish to consider a second opinion. If travel is a problem, many plastic surgeons offer "photographic consultation" over the internet.Best wishes...
