Do breast implants change size after breastfeeding?

HI,Breast implants do not change size after pregnancy or breast feeding, but breasts do! Ideally the best time to get implants is after you are done with having children because then you can count of the size and shape of the breast remaining relatively constant.All my best,Daniel Medalie, MD

The size of the implants will not change during and after your pregnancy, but your own breast tissue will. The extent to which they increase during pregnancy and then decrease afterwards is quite variable among women. If you have plans to have children in the next year or two, I would recommend waiting to have your implants placed. But if your plans are a bit further down the road, having the procedure now would be reasonable. Many patients have children after they have breast augmentation and the results of the surgery are not always negatively affected.

Your implants will not change in size. The breast tissue can change with pregnancy and/or breast feeding.  The changes are not predictable and, for many, are not permanent.  Many of our patients have gone on to have children and breast fed after augmentation with no significant change in the appearance if their breasts. Others have noticed ptosis after this experience which could be corrected with a breast lift (mastopexy). If pregnancy is anticipated soon, one might wish to wait on surgery. I would not, however, discourage someone from augmentation re- distant plans for childbearing as the effects are usually minimal and can be remedied as needed

Breast implants do not change in size after breastfeeding, it's your own breast that changes.  You may lose some of your own breast tissue and your skin may not bounce back.  If you are planning on having kids in the near future (next couple of years), then wait but if kids are not in your immediate future, then go ahead and have your procedure and enjoy them now.  ac

The breast implant will not change size (unless you have a deflation). Your breast tissue will engorge with the pregnancy and subsequent milk production. This tends to stretch your natural tissue which will likely droop in time after the engorgement subsides. Interestingly, the amount of droop is lessened by having an implant that gives more volume and a fuller base to the entire breast. 

Thank you for the question.The implant size does not change, what changes is the breast itself. Normally the breast will present skin laxity during and after pregnancy. My suggestion will be for you to wait 6 months after child birth in order to get this procedure done.Dr. Campos

Hi lilyb8, Breasts implants do not change size with breastfeeding and pregnancy.  However, your breast tissue and skin can change during this process.  This will affect the overall appearance of your breast. I agree with the other plastic surgeons on this post that these changes are often temporary, but for some, it can be permanent.  This is a topic you should discuss with  your board-certified plastic surgeon so you can come to an educated decision. Sincerely,Dr. Chung

No, breast implants will not change size with pregnancy but the breast itself will.  Breast implants are inert and can not change in size.

Breast implants are unaffected by pregnancy but the overlying breast tissue is not immune to its influences. Many patients after breast augmentation become pregnant and have no real change in their breasts while some women will develop a little more loose breast tissue afterwards. Since the influence of pregnancy on the shape of the breasts is unpredictable, that should not affect having breast augmentation now. 

Dear Lily B,Your breast implants will not change size after pregnancy or breast feeding.  However, your breast tissue may change size or volume after pregnancy with or without breast feeding.  If childbirth is expected within the next few years, then it is probably better to wait for your augmentation.  Good luck!
