I Am Considering Getting a Brazilian Butt Lift in the Future. How Long Is There No Sitting Post-Op?

Not sitting after a Brazilian butt lift procedure is extremely important for the success of the surgery. This is not as challenging as you might imagine.

This is typically the sitting protocol that I use:


1. No sitting for two weeks 

This is because pressure can seriously affect the results by compromising the fat survival.  But you can lie on your side or chest, go to the bathroom, and sit for a few minutes but that is about it.


2. Cigar-shape pillow

 I routinely encourage my patients to buy a cigar-shape pillow. Such pillow should be placed under the thighs and not directly under the buttocks. It will bump your buttock, thus minimizing the pressure. You need to use this pillow for a whole month.

Brazilian Butt Lift recovery time is dependent on how the patient’s body reacts to the procedure. Patients usually return to work after a week but you should not sit without the use of cushions for at least two weeks and you must wear a compression garment for several weeks after the procedure. You should wait until at least 2 weeks after the procedure to engage in sexual activity. Swelling and discomfort normally fades at six weeks. After about a month you will be mostly healed and you can get a nice idea of the permanent results after around six months.

The best person to ask about this is your surgeon, as every surgeon has their own advice. Generally, I recommend that patients don't sit for at least 2 weeks after surgery, but they can go to the washroom normally.   

Sitting post-operatively can damage the fat cells injected into your buttocks. Patients should avoid sitting on their buttocks for the first two weeks post operatively.

It is okay to use the restroom, as that will be necessary. The point of your “no sitting” rule basically means no sitting down on it for periods of time. But a quick bathroom trip is acceptable. Your follow up appointment should be the first couple days after surgery. I personally prefer to see my patients day five post-operatively, as they have more time to heal instead of getting into a car and coming into my office. Also make sure if and when you have to sit down, make sure it is on a soft surface, if it is not, try using a donut pillow.

Because the outcome of your Brazilian Butt Lift will depend on how well the fat placed into your buttocks survives, and this in turn initially depends on the diffusion of blood to the fat cells (until new blood vessels are formed), it is very important not to sit, as this would compromise this diffusion of blood and the formation of these new vessels.

Surgeons vary in their recommendations regarding how long to avoid sitting, and so the best thing to do would be to choose a surgeon you are confident can give you a safe, lovely outcome, and follow their recommendations.

Each doctor has their own protocol and it is very important that you talk to him about your concerns and goals. I recommend my patients not to sit for more than 30 mins. every two hours, for the first 2 weeks, and always with the help of a boppy pillow. If you have any concerns, I suggest you to follow up close with your plastic surgeon.

The hardest part of the Brazilian butt lift is preserving the injected fat. This requires 10 days of not sitting and sleeping on the stomach. Sitting and putting pressure on the buttocks will kill the fat cells and cause an suboptimal result. You have to sit sometimes but minimizing the time setting  will protect your result. Prolonged pressure on the fat cells will damage the pressure for a short time will do little damage to the cells.

When you 1st do the fat injection the fat cells have no blood supply. The blood vessels will begin to grow on the 4th and 5th postoperative day. It's the 1st 5 days where the fat cells are the weakest each day after that get stronger. There is no difference between a 9 and a 11, 10 days is an arbitrary number. On day 11 you don't want to sit for 6 hours straight, but you can do more setting budgets move around trying not to put pressure in only one place. Doughnuts are not a good idea because a create an uneven pressure which may lead to an uneven result. Sleeping is also an issue and you shouldn't sleep on any of the area  that had the fat injection.

Most times the 1st follow-up would be within the 1st few days.

Thanks for your question! This is one of the most common questions that we receive and also one of the most important. The recovery process after a Brazilian Butt Lift is extremely important to get the results that you are looking for. 

We recommend to our patients that they avoid sitting and putting pressure on their butt, hips, and areas where they received fat grafting for AT LEAST two weeks. During this time, when you HAVE to sit, patients can use a donut inflatable cushion to avoid putting pressure onto the grafts. Keep in mind that the quality of these cushions can vary greatly so be careful when selecting them. This is one of the most common surgeies in our practice so we carry these cusions as well as post-operative compression garments that we have designed.
