I got an otoplasty a little over two months ago. I want to start wrestling again as soon as possible. I would be wearing headgear during practice, as well as during matches, which covers the ears completely. Is there still risk of breaking the sutures even with headgear? And could additional precautions like taping my ears back under the headgear help eliminate whatever risk there is? I have obviously already asked my surgeon about this but want additional oppinions. Thanks!

Answer: Can I wrestle after otoplasty? No one should replace your plastic surgeon when it comes to advising you about postoperative activity. In my practice, I would advise that you stay way from contact sports ( especially wrestling, regardless of use of headgear etc.) for AT LEAST an additional month (preferably six months total), understanding that the sooner you return to the sport, the greater risk you are taking. Best wishes.

Answer: Otoplasty Postoperative Course I would caution you severely from returning to wrestling so soon after otoplasty. With a contact sport like wrestling, there is risk not only of pulling on the ear and tearing stitches, but also, of trauma to the ear from impact, which could cause a hematoma. I would recommend following your specific surgeon's advice regarding return to contact sports. In my practice, the wait time for that is several months. I understand wanting to get back to your regular life, but, also, if you went through the trouble to have the surgery, you want the best results you can have. Best of luck.
