Long flight 17 days after gynecomastia procedure. Is it safe and tips on compression garment?

Thanks for the question. You should be able to flying by after 17 days after your surgery. If any unexpected incident happens in your treatment process, this time can be extended or shortened and you should talk about this situation with your surgeon. I wish you all the best.

Thank you for sharing your question and congratulations on your procedure.  After 17 days it should be safe to travel after surgery and I would recommend using your garment while flying.  Though pressurized the inside of the airplane during flight is not the same as when you are on the ground and you will notice your tissues will swell.  It would be fine to remove the garment for a short period of time and I would advocate it during your layover.  Hope this helps.

I would encourage you to discuss management of your compression garment with your surgeon, as they will certainly have their preference based on their knowledge of your operative procedure.  The real concern is not the operative site, but your legs, specifically your veins.  Surgery is a risk for the development of a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and so is long air travel.  Make certain that your physician is aware of your plans and get their thoughts.  If they permit you to fly, wear compression stockings, stay hydrated, and walk around frequently.  

It should be fine to fly after this type of surgery. I would recommend that you do not remove the vest as the swelling will get worse and it will be difficult to get the garment back on. Please make sure that you wear some stockings (we normally send patients home with these) on the flight, drink plenty of fluid and ambulate regularly. We no longer recommend taking an Aspirin before the flight. Best of luck.

This is a question that should have already been addressed with your surgeon before your procedure. If this has been done follow whatever guidelines he or she gave you.  If not you should call and talk to the doctor now and find out what their guidelines are for traveling so soon after surgery.
