Did Juvederm settle above my lip line? (photos)

Question

Had Juvederm (not even a full cc) injected into my upper and lower lip 4 days ago. I have a noticeable about of puffiness above my upper lip line and it's giving me sort of a duck look. This happened in the past too. Especially when lights are above, the upper puffiness gets highlighted and the filler looks silly. Why is this happening?

Hello, at 4 days post injection, you are more than likely still experiencing swelling. This swelling around the injection site can last as long as 2 weeks. I would wait a bit longer and then schedule a consultation with your injector if you still feel you are experiencing puffiness above your lips.

Thank you for sharing your question and photographs.  Most likely this upper lip fullness is due more to swelling than accidental injection of JVD.  This appearance is not uncommon in some patients, especially depending on the pattern of injections used by your physician.  Allow your results to mature over two weeks, you should see a steady drop in tissue size if swelling is the culprit.  Best wishes.

One of the problems with Juvederm is that it is very hydrophilic and can swell a great degree.  Since it is only four days I would wait at least 10 days to see the full results if the swelling resolves.  In the future a different filler such as Restylane might be better for you and give more natural looking results.  Best, Dr. Green

first off you may still be swollen as it's only been 4 days and it may take up to two weeks for the swelling to completely go down. If the condition does not improve speak to your injector about other options. Good luck from York City

Thank you for your question BD1112. I understand your concern. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler designed to enhance the
appearance of the face. It is difficult to make an assessment without before photographs. However, swelling is normal for 2 weeks after a treatment. At that point final results are seen. I recommend that my patients apply cold compresses such as ice packs and sleep on an extra pillow if possible to reduce the swelling. Please consult with a doctor for specific recommendations. It is really too soon to tell whether or not this is from too much filler or from swelling. The lips are particularly sensitive and sometimes, it can take the full two weeks for the swelling to subside. If, at that point, you still aren't happy then make an appointment to see your injector.

Thank you for your question and for sharing your photographs.  Sorry that you are having some concerns about your postprocedure appearance.  Swelling is common after treatment with Juvederm, especially in the lip area.  It is too early to judge your final result.  Please keep in mind that it will take 2 weeks to allow for normal postprocedure swelling to fully resolve and to see your final result.  At that point, if you continue to have any concerns, please be sure to see your injector for an in-person reevaluation to fully discuss your concerns in order to determine the best course of action.  Any unwanted filler can be easily removed.  Hope this helps and best wishes!

It's too early to tell if this is filler or swelling.  Swelling from lip injections can last up to two weeks.  If after that time frame you still have concerns, return to your injector for an evaluation.

Thank you for your question and for submitting your photos.  The lips are a sensitive area, and are particularly prone to swelling that can last up to 2 weeks after filler injections.  It's difficult to assess what your final results will be until your swelling have fully subsided.  
For now, I would suggest gently applying ice or cool compresses to your lips.  I also find that taking over-the-counter antihistamines like Zyrtec or Benadryl can help with swelling after fillers.  If you are still concerned about the appearance of your lips after 2 weeks or so, it would be worthwhile to follow-up with your injector to discuss your concerns.  If necessary, Juvederm can easily be dissolved with hyaluronidase.  Best of luck!
