My bmi is 37.4 can i still have a tummy tuck and lipo all in the same procedure?

If you are healthy and at a safe weight, you can have the combination performed by an expert at both procedures who can hold anesthesia time to about 4 hours.  BMI is not the only factor.

For health and safety reasons, best to be at a BMI less than 30 or within 10 pounds of your goal weight and stable at that weight for 6 months prior to surgery for optimal results.

Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty) is a
plastic surgery procedure designed to flatten the abdomen by removing excess
skin and fat, and to tighten the abdominal wall.

Women and men who have
excess skin and/or fat around the abdomen which does not respond to diet and
exercise are candidates for abdominoplasty. Many patients complain that they
cannot flatten their abdominal muscles through exercise, which also means a tummy
tuck may be right for them.

Abdominoplasty candidates
have:

excess abdominal skin which may sag

·        
a disproportionate or protruding abdomen

weakened or separated abdominal muscles

·        
excess fat concentrated in the abdomen

Other tummy tuck patients
may recently have lost a lot of weight and need to have excess skin and tissue
removed. Many women choose to have an abdominoplasty following pregnancy. Older
patients may be candidates for a tummy tuck due to reduced skin elasticity,
family traits, age, immobility.

There are different criteria for a patient's maximum BMI and these criteria often vary by surgical venue (hospital vs. outpatient surgicenter.)  My general preference is for a patient's BMI to be 35 or less.  Best of luck.

I advise my patients being at your ideal weight will give the best outcome. I would encourage you to start a proper diet and exercise routine to help get to your goal and then consult with a board certified plastic surgeon. I would have liked to have seen pictures to help answer your question, I  would recommend you be at least at a BMI of 35. Remember that all surgeons have slightly different pre operative instruction if you feel you are ready for surgery I would go for another consultation to see what your different options are.  Make sure that the surgeon is Board Certified, that you see his before and after photos, that all your questions are answered and most importantly that you feel comfortable with him.Best of luck.

Personally, I only add limited liposuction at the same time as a tummy tuck to decrease risks. Perhaps, liposuction alone will achieve the results you desire.An exam and consultation with a plastic surgeon who performs these procedures is recommended to confirm you are a candidate as well as discuss your options and expectations. 

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends BMI less than 30 to reduce the risks of surgery. Above 30, you would have a doubling of the risk of infection and wound healing problems. However, for some people weight loss is really challenging and trying a medically supervised program and a trainer would be helpful. It might not be realistically for you to lose all this weight and so considering a panniculectomy instead of a tummy tuck with liposuction is a possible alternative. Warm regards, Dr. Aldo

  The recommended BMI is less than 30. This is the recommendation of the American society of plastic surgery. The reason simply, is increased chance of complications.
