Is it okay to walk around a mall a day after a BA?

Question

It’s the day after my BA. We are visiting from out of town and spent about 3-4 hours walking around a mall. I rested when needed and took breaks . I did use my arms at times, mostly just to look through racks of clothes and open doors occasionally. My breasts feel a little bit warm to the touch now. Is this my body healing? Is it possible I overdid it and affected something?

Congratulations on your surgery.  Light walking after your procedure is typically a good thing.  I would recommend taking it easy and listening to your body.  The warmth of the breast I would recommend you contact your surgeon and just bring it to his or her attention and follow their instructions.  Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your question. It should not be a major issue and gentle walking can be a good thing. Take your time, listen to your body and rest when you need to. If you are feeling a little extra swelling it is likely related to what you have done. Make sure the breasts are relatively symmetrical and they are not tight and firm. It's a great question and congratulations again on your surgery. I would speak with your surgeon about their specific recommendations for your recovery. In my office, I have no problem with people going out to dinner  or walking around after the procedure. I think that it's unlikely that you caused any problems from gentle activity. Dear baybb2018,The majority of breast augmentation patients need one week of downtime. Depending on the work environment (heavy lifting, etc) more time off may be necessary. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after surgery to avoid blood clots in the legs. I suggest that you follow your plastic surgeon’s post-operative instructions, especially on the level of activity that you can do and your scheduled follow up checkups, for faster and recovery.Daniel Barrett, MD

Walking is highly recommended after breast augmentation surgery, as long as you don't over do it and take breaks as you did. Just be sure not to do any heavy lifting and keep in touch with your surgeon for any post operative questions. Good luck.

Thank you for your question. I think the fact that you went walking around the day after surgery is a great thing! You are being active and preventing blood clots (DVT). Just make sure that you do not overdo it and listen to your body. Avoid heavy lifting or anything strenuous. And follow the instructions of your plastic surgeon.Hope this helps!

It’s great that you’re thinking about mobility so soon after your procedure. Light walking is beneficial and can help with circulation, but walking around a mall for several hours just one day after breast augmentation may be too much too soon. On post-op day one, your body is still adjusting — you’ll have swelling, possibly some discomfort, and your focus should be on healing and rest. I usually advise patients to take short, slow walks around the house to prevent stiffness and reduce clot-risk, and hold off on longer outings or shopping until around day 3-5, depending on your discomfort, drain/tape status and whether your surgeon has cleared you. Always check with your surgeon that your pain, vital signs and incisions are doing well before leaving for extended activity.

Spending that much time walking around the day after surgery was likely too much.  Generally I advise my patients they can return to work and nonstrenuous activities 10-14 days after surgery.  I encourage you to rest and closely follow your surgeon's post operative instructions for optimal results.
