Help! Fluid around implant with infection: I was admitted to hospital with a severe infection.

Question

I had swelling of my right breast no redness or rash. I've had my under muscle silicone implants for 1 year. They gave me antibiotics and sent me home saying there wasn't enough fluid to drain and risk popping implant. My plastic surgeon advised this does happen sometimes and I should pee out liquid after a few weeks. What are my options here and should I go to a bigger hospital perhaps one in Beverly hills where they probably see more cases?

Hello,It is not normal to have a fluid collection form one year after breast augmentation surgery. You need either ultrasonic guided aspiration of the implant or open surgery to remove the fluid and check for infection or white cells in the fluid. If your surgeon isn't an ABPS certified/ASAPS member surgeon, go find one who can help you. You may end up needing a revision surgery regardless. Best of luck!

I think you need to take the advice of your surgeon. This does not sound like an infection, either. It’s not uncommon to develop late seroma formation. Typically I would wrap you with an ace bandage for 3-5 days, around the clock, to try to compress the area and squeeze the fluid out. If it persists, drainage under ultrasound guidance would be my next step. There is a very rare condition called Bi-ALCL, a lymphoma associated with certain types of implants, but that would not be something I would be concerned about initially. If it persists, then have your doctor pursue it. If it has to be drained, then tests can be performed on the fluid to evaluate it for ALCL. Best.

I'm sorry this happened to you.  Infections with breast implants can be problematic at times.  If the infection settles around the implant it may be necessary to remove the implant, allow the infection to resolve and then place an implant again at a later date.  If you are uncomfortable with the advice you are being given you can request a second opinion from another board certified plastic surgeon near you.

It is rare to have a seroma following breast augmentation surgery, especially at 1 year post op.  You must have been hit or bumped.  Contact your surgeon with your concerns, and ask for your records if you are not satisfied.  Seeking a second opinion could ease your mind.
