Is liposuction safe for diabetic person?

It is typically safe for Diabetics to have liposuction as long as the diabetes is controlled.  Your best bet would be to get surgical clearance from your medical doctor or endocrinologist before preceeding.

Diabetes increases the risks for any operation but since the complication rate with liposuction is extremely low a well-controlled diabetic has little to fear from the procedure.

Thank you for the great question. When discussing the risks of liposuction with my patients I recommend the following.Liposuction is safe in diabetics. The infection rate may be a little higher but is acceptable. You would clearance from your medical doctor but in most cases the results are great and to proceed would be safe.

Diabetes in and of itself is not a contraindication for liposuction.  It depends on your specific health parameters.  Ask your doctor and plastic surgeon.

Diabetics in general have an increased risk of complications, but if your diabetes is well controlled and you get medical clearance, it is possible.

Patients with diabetes are at high risk of complications after the surgery, along with delayed healing time. Most patients have a higher chance of developing an infection after surgery. It is important to let your surgeon know about your past medical history along with the medications you are currently taking. As far as pre-op is concerned a full physical should be done including bloodwork that includes an hemoglobin A1C (along with other pre-op bloodwork) EKG & a urine analysis. 

Diabetics are inherently at higher risk of surgical complications.  The answer to your question is that it depends. If you are insulin dependent, the risk is higher.  My recommendation is to discuss with your endocrinologist whether he would clear you for cosmetic surgery as this would be required along with preop blood work.

Diabetics that are diet maintained or oral meds maintained usually can have liposuction.  Of course all depends om the rest of the health picture.  Diabetics that are insulin dependent we do NOT do.  The diabetics that are insulin dependent pose a significant additional risk of infection and other problems.   My Best,  Dr C
