Does a nose job affect the nose’s flexibility and softness?

Question

I have a flat nose and I’ve been interested in rhinoplasty to make my nose taller. However, I have been contemplating whether or not rhinoplasty would “harden” my nose. I heard that after healing, moving your nose would be harder because it is less flexible and that it is less “soft”.

Hello and thank you for your question.  Usually after one year your nose should not feel abnormally hard.  You must allow time for the swelling to resolve.   Make sure you specifically look at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon and not just a computer animation system.  You should be able to view numerous pictures of actual patients with noses similar to yours performed by your surgeon.

With closed and atraumatic technique  it will not be harder after operation,
but with open technique it is possible.

The short answer is yes .... for about 6 months after which the nose will soften and become more pliable again.  In the grand scheme of things you would notice that perhaps the nose is 10% more "stiff" than it was previous to surgery due to scar tissue and the anatomic rearrangements that typically occur.  But otherwise your nose will still have the generic feel of a natural nose.

It really depends on multiple factors on what type of  Rhinoplasty you are having done. If you are adding cartilage grafts/ implants to the nose, then it can become more stiff, especially  when placement of ear cartilage or rib cartilage.
