Help! Im so confused on what to do about dental work after BA?

Question

So i have been reading on here that many surgeons will suggest that the patients go on antibiotics before any dental work. However is this only for the first several weeks/months or is this for lifetime? I am getting my ba done in three weeks and later down the line (maybe a year or two later) i will be having all four of my wisdom teeth removed. On top of that i get dental cleanings every six months (my most recent one was a couple months ago) is this all going to be ok? (I need opinions)

Thanks for your inquiry.  I do
prescribe antibiotics for my patients who have dental work done after breast
augmentation, but that is really surgeon-dependent.  However, I only do this for major dental work
and not for routine cleanings.  For a
wisdom teeth removal, I would suggest taking an antibiotic.  Sometimes, the dental work can cause bacteria
to circulate in your system and the thought is that bacteria can cause capsular
contracture deformity.  I hope this is

That's a great question because there is no specific scientific proof for antibiotic use. I recommend to my patients to use an antibiotic, during the first year after surgery, when having a dental procedure that produces blood in the mouth, like a cleaning. I have them use the antibiotic the day before, the day of the procedure, and the day after. My philosophy is to give the breasts and implants a little extra protection from the normal bacteria in the mouth that might get into the bloodstream. Thank you for your question.  I personally recommend precautionary antibiotics like Dr Minniti for the same reasons.  You will get different opinions on this matter but bottom line is the antibiotics are just precautionary.

There is no good evidence regarding what to do for patients if they are getting dental work and they have breast implants. To be on the safe side, it may not be a bad idea to take an antibiotic beginning the day before and ending the day after the dental work. Whether you do this during the first year only or forever, is up to you and your surgeon. I have seen patients who develop contractures many years after their surgery and the only possible cause I can find is dental work done in the months prior. This may or may not have been the cause but there is no way to know.

Although you will find differing opinions on the necessity/efficacy of antibiotics prior to dental procedures,  I know of no scientific basis/study  that documents a decreased incidence of encapsulation or any other problem associated with breast implants. Having said that, if a patient is undergoing an extensive dental procedure (where there is significant potential for bacteremia),  within the first few months after breast augmentation surgery, I would not argue if she wanted  "prophylactic" antibiotic therapy.

You should remember to take antibiotics during your dental work to avoid translocation of bacteria from the oral cavity to the breast implants.

There is a great deal of concern in the Public Health sector regarding overuse of antibiotics and the development of resistant strains of bacteria. There is no evidence that antibiotics are of any benefit to women who have had a breast augmentation when they get dental work other than in the first few weeks postop. In 35 years and thousands of breast augment patients I have never recommended antibiotics for dental work and have never seen a patient with a problem from an infection or other complication of dental work.

While there is no hard scientific evidence of benefit, I recommend that patients take prophylactic oral antibiotics the day before the day of the day after significant dental work. This is similar to the recommendations for patients who have hard valves and make sense since the breast implant is a foreign body.
