Question

I am 3 week’s post abdominoplasty with lipo surgery. Twice I had dizziness, nauseous, excessive sweating, and fainted while changing my dressings and gauze on my legs where I have the drains. The right drain was removed day 15 from the day of my surgery. Why am I having these symptoms? At first, I thought it was lack of eating. But now I am eating 3 meals a day and drinking 128 oz of water.

The symptoms of dizziness, nausea, and sweating you describe are likely caused by vaso-vagal attacks or “neurocardiogenic syncope”. Your nervous system is reacting when you change your dressings, and you experience these symptoms as your blood pressure drops. You could, however, be having these symptoms due to post-operative anemia or low blood count. It is advisable to see your surgeon to discuss whether you should check your blood count now. It would be helpful to have someone else change your dressings for now so that you can avoid these unpleasant symptoms and be safe.

Thanks for the question and provided information as well. Please talk to your doctor about these symptoms, he will probably order lab tests to verify blood count and rule out anemia.

You should go in for a check up with your PS.  Describe your symptoms and your doctor will probably order some lab work to make sure there are no abnormalities.
