Saucer shaped firmness around navel - what is it? (Photo)

Question

Most days naval area swells either protruding a bit in naval area -or as if there is a small dinner plate under the naval area so a bit raised and firm couple inches all way around. I am 12 post TT What is this area specific swelling just in this area? It can't be structural as I had an MRI due to unexplained pain but nothing wrong showed up eg no tear etc. I will see my PS next week to get the formal MRI results asI got them informally from his colleague already .but naval area concerns me.

It is difficult to say what is causing the firmness you are describing.  Perhaps an old hematoma or fat necrosis?  I'd certainly discuss it with your surgeon.  I wish you the best,Dr. Gabbay.

Thank you for your question. From your photo it does appear as though you have swelling around your umbilicus. Further investigation is necessary to identify what is happening in the area. Schedule a follow up with your surgeon to discuss your concern. Hope this helps,

The swelling is definitely noticeable. If you're not wearing garments any longer and have been out and about during the day, the swelling can become more prominent. Try wearing the stage 1 garment from right after surgery, if it's still tight enough, to see if it helps. Also, address this concern with the pictures you provided here with your plastic surgeon at your next visit even if the swelling subsides so that your plastic surgeon is made aware and can evaluate you in person.Thank you for your question and for sharing your pictures!Melinda Lacerna, MD FACS
