Does your doctor have to be a board certified in plastic surgery to perform liposuction and BBL procedure?

I had a consult with a doctor today for a BBL. He does his procedures under local anesthesia in a room located in his office building. He is an internist as well. I looked him up after my consult an cannot find his name on the Board Certification for Plastic Surgeons. Is this right? Can he still perform BBL and lipo if he does not have a Board Certification in plastic surgery?

You will want to have the most experienced plastic surgeon performing your plastic surgery procedure. An internist is not qualified to perform plastic surgery and does not have the training to do so. Board certification in any medical specialty is not required, but highly recommended and shows your surgeon is more qualified and credentialed. Combination procedures can give powerful results but SAFETY is KEY. You definitely have to choose your surgeon correctly and make sure that he/she has the training and experience to meet your goals with absolute safety. Board Certification matters.  Make sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  There are numerous "sham" boards which are not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialities (ABMS) which is the ONLY legitimate certifying agency.  An internal medical doctor is not properly trained to do liposuction or a BBL.  The fact that they are doing the procedure in the "office" means that they do not have privileges in a certified hospital or surgery center to do these procedures.  I'm attaching an article that I would encourage you to read.

If you were having cataract surgery would you go to an Internist? Think that a physician needs a special training and education in a specific program to be an specialist in this particular medicine field, is something that takes about 4 years for some specialties, or 5 to 6 years for plastic surgery. A weekend program is not enough to have a full training in plastic surgery or just liposuction. In order to have privileges to perform surgery in a hospital or approved surgical facilities, the surgeon has to present specific credentials such a board certification to ensure that your surgeon has the proper training to perform a particular surgery. I will recommend you to find a  Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in your area, and check before and after photos of his/her cases, and ask for referrals from other patients to be sure you are in the right hands.

Brazilian Buttock Lift, Liposuction and Fat Transfer are all major surgeries that require care, expertise in the current techniques and aesthetics of the body.Such surgeries should be done in a sterile environment (Operating room) with patient monitoring during and after surgery and preoperative full evaluation. Board Certification is voluntary. He should be a licensed physician in your state. I recommend that you seek a plastic surgeon who underwent training in PS and has performed hundreds of these procedures. Check his reviews and photos to assure he/she is skilled to do it.

Stay away.Any PS should be board certified (in any country)And most of all your PS should have lots of experience. If he has performed over a thousand procedures, you know you are dealing with an experienced PS.Plus the operating room must meet international standards, an anesthesiologist must be present etc..
