I am considering getting a breast augmentation and my PS recommended me to get off the pill a few weeks before but I have alot of negative side effects coming off the pill and was hoping I could just continue using it. My nurse Advised me it would be fine as long as I got clearance from my Dr and understood the risks involved but I wanted to see what advice others had.How likely those risks are. Have you seen issues in your own patients who stayed on?

Answer: Birth control pills and breast augmentation surgery There are increased risks of tromboembolisam (blood cloths of legs and lungs) in patient undergoing major surgery while on birth control. However, short surgery like breast augmentation, healthy patient with no associated risks (obesity, history of blood cloths, multiple miscarriages), with proper intraoperative protection, should not present then low risk for DVT/PE. Discuss this issue with your surgeon again, please. Good luck.

Answer: Birth control and breast augmentation Birth control is one of many factors that can affect risk of blood clots after surgery. The official risk scale (the 2005 Caprini Risk Model) gives it 1 point. A major surgery (like breast augmentation) is worth 2 points. If you have no other risk factors, the recommendation is to wear compression stockings and sequential calf compression massagers during surgery and to walk around at least 500 steps a day. There should be no need to stop the birth control based on standard recommendations.
