Do I have to wait until my child is completely weaned to get Botox again? Help!

Question

I am breastfeeding my daughter twice a day. But want to resume my botox due to constant migraines. I also have found that my right brow sits higher than my left and this is most likely because of the effects of my botox (pre-baby) wearing off. Do I have to wait until my child is completely weaned to get botox again? Help!

The use of Botox injections for migraines during breastfeeding is unlikely to cause any harm to your baby. I recommend you to wait couple of hours after the treatment

The chance that Botox or any other neuromodulator — such as Dysport or Xeomin — could affect your breast milk is pretty low. These are local treatments that do not enter the bloodstream. However, when it comes to babies, we don’t like to take any kind of risk if a procedure isn’t absolutely necessary. If your migraines are debilitating, you may need to make the choice of getting Botox to control them; there are no studies that have linked any kind of risk to Botox and breastfeeding. I would not do it for the eyebrow asymmetry. Please consult a board-certified dermatologist or neurologist if you decide to move forward with Botox for migraines.

Hello and thank you for your question.  First of all, congratulations on your newborn and your desire to breastfeed!  There are no studies regarding the safety of Botox or fillers while pregnant or breastfeeding.  Therefore, most injectors do not inject during this time.  However, once the patient has been properly consented and is aware of the lack of studies during breastfeeding, it is not unusual for patients to receive botox or fillers while breastfeeding.  This would certainly be a personal position for the board certified provider and the patient.  I hope this information helps and best of luck to you!

Most Doctors will recommend to not have Botox while pregnant or breastfeeding. There is no studies of the safety of Botox or Juvederm on this subject at this time. However, plenty of women have been pregnant or breast feeding while getting cosmetic treatments. All my patients are asked about this and informed that studies have not been performed. The decision is then left up to them. Best, Dr. Emer

Botox is a local treatment and doesn’t enter your bloodstream, so it should be OK if you absolutely need it to control your migraines. However, if you’re looking for wrinkle control, please wait until after your child is weaned. Though Botox is safe, there are no studies that examine its effects in breast feeding. A board-certified dermatologist can administer Botox for migraine when you’re ready.

Hello and thank you for your inquiry. There is no real study about the effects of either Botox or Fillers on women during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding. Because of the lack of information I do not suggest pregnant women and mothers who are nursing to get Botox and or fillers. Doctors will recommend that Botox is avoided during pregnancy and breast feeding as a precaution. This is due to the fact that no medical studies have been carried out to study any adverse effects of Botox during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

You ask an excellent question.  Botox during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding has not been studied and, therefore, many doctors suggest against it.  However, many women have received it either before they knew they were pregnant or while they were breastfeeding and there is no known evidence that it is harmful.  I explain this to my patients and have them sign a special consent stating they understand what I have told them and then I will inject nursing moms.
