Answer: I am a 24 year old male and was wondering am I allowed to have a rhinoplasty procedure if I have diabetes? You should make sure that the blood sugars are well controlled. I perform these surgeries with closed technique to preserve the structure of the nose and minimize visible scarring. Look at website before and after galleries and reviews to help you select your surgeon.Kenneth Hughes, MDLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Rhinoplasty in diabetic patients Thank you for your question. In my past experience, patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes can safely be submitted to rhinoplasty. The key factor is that the diabetes should be stable and under good control prior to surgery. You should get the doctor who manages your diabetes involved in the process, to get appropriate monitoring and treatment before, during and after the procedure. I would recommend you find a facial plastic surgeon in your area that you trust and feel comfortable with. You should discuss your concerns with that surgeon in person. Good luck! Marcelo Antunes MD

Answer: Diabetes and a rhinoplasty? Diabetes that is well controlled should not be a contraindication to a rhinoplasty.I would suggest you find a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) that you trust and are comfortable with. You should discuss your concerns with that surgeon in person. Before undergoing surgery you should have medical clearance from your primary physician and/or endocrinologist and he or she should discuss any specific management aspects of your diabetes with your plastic surgeon and anesthesiologist.Robert Singer, MD FACSLa Jolla, California
