How do I get rid of my chalazion, with out getting surgery to removal it?

Hi, I often treat chalazia and styes with steroid injections first and most of the time that is all a patient will need. Occasionally it may take more than one injection and if that does not resolve it completely, it can be opened and drained either from the backside of the lid (without visible scarring) or with a minimally visible scar that blends in from the skin side. You should see an oculoplastic surgeon for best results. 

Steroid injections will often help to get rid of a chalazion.  At a year it may be too late for this to work, but still worth a try.  Lots of good oculoplastics people in Austin, so go see one. 

I seldom find it necessary to operate on chalazia. They are exquisitely sensitive to Kenalog injection. As a result of that, very few of the patients I see ever need surgery to resolve their chalazia. Unfortunately, this technique is practiced by very few ophthalmologist.  They make more money doing surgery than injecting steroid so there is no real incentive to recommend the steroid.  That is unfortunate because the surgery can be damaging to the eyelid.

Often Chalazia will respond to oral Doxycycline, just as acne will, early in the process. Kenalog injections may be useful, although after one year there be enough of a scar capsule that it may not cause complete resolution. It is still worth trying a Kenalog injection at this point, but if it doesn't work then drainage would be appropriate.
