The way someone can go blind with an injection if the HA filler goes into an artery. There has been cases around the world where this has happened so injectors always have to inform you of potential consequences that may arise. You need to go to an injector who is well qualified (board certified plastic surgeon or a nurse working under a surgeon) and knows their anatomy so that safe injections can be offered in order for these complications can lessen. Special needles called cannulas are also used in practice to lower the risk of these occurring.
Blindness from a lip filler is extremely rare and I do not believe has been reported in the scientific literature. Blindness from injection has been shown to be associated with injections around the eyelid area. Hope this helps.Raja Mohan MD
I have never heard of any case where a patient when blind from a lip injection. Bruising, yes. Blindness, no.
To my knowledge there has never been any cases reported of blindness after having the lips injected with fillers. I have personally completely switched to using blunt microcanulas for the injection of fillers which cause less bruising and swelling and more importantly significantly decrease the possibility of any vascular embolization.
Thanks for the great question! Although many of the arteries in the face are connected to each other, it would be very rare to have blindness from injection of lip fillers. Most of the cases of blindness have occurred with injection of the filler around the eyes. Lip fillers are not totally benign and can still cause areas of skin loss if injected incorrectly. I currently only use HA fillers as they are reversible if something did happen. I hope this helps and best of luck!~Dr. Sieber

Sorry to hear that you’re having an uncomfortable experience with your injections. Because the lips are such a sensitive area, they can be prone to significant bruising, which is what it appears you’re currently going through. Everyone’s body reacts differently to these types of treat...
Thank you for your question and for sharing your photographs. Based on your narrative and photos, this appears to be postprocedure bruising. Please keep in mind that it will take 2 weeks to allow for normal postprocedure swelling and bruising to fully resolve and to see your final result. ...
