Hello, im a type 2 diabetic who is about to have a tummy tuck procedure to correct something a doctor did 29 yrs ago. i still have problems with this. the question i have is: what time should a diebetic have surgery, considering nothing is to be eaten after midnight. i will not take any of my pills because my sugar levels has been dropping low latley. i think they are better well managed. my surgery is scheldued for 1130, but i can drink tea, apple juice up until 8. can you give me advice?

Answer: Tummy tuck surgery Regardless of what time your surgery is at, there will be a time period per anesthesia guidelines that you cannot eat or drink prior to your surgery; it is not dependent on time of day. Your surgery facility will check your blood sugar while they are preparing your for surgery, and can give you something in your IV if your blood sugar is too low. Be sure to consult your primary doctor or whoever is managing your diabetes before making any changes to your medications related to surgery, or otherwise. This is a big surgery, and stress on the body can have an impact on blood sugar levels, so make sure to keep all of your doctors in the loop.
