I had a sub muscular breast augmentation in December of 2012 and told my doctor I was a bodybuilder. I have become an elite powerlifter. My implants have moved closer to my arm pits and breasts are very tender after a heavy workout. I am currently training for Nationals in October, but feel the implants are limiting my strength and causing internal rotation and impingement of my shoulders. Also my scars under my breasts have not gone away and it has been 4 years since surgery.

Answer: Recovery time for removal of submuscular implants in a very muscular athlete? Is it possible without cutting muscle? (photo) Thank you for your quesiton, It is not always necessary to cut muscle to remove the implants, however, we do often restrict any vigorous upper body workouts for two-four weeks after the procedure. Too much friction in the now empty pocket can cause a fluid accumulation called a seroma that will need to be tapped and drained in order for you to heal correctly. We tend to put our patients in a very fitted garment or ace wrap around there chest to achieve good compression to help avoid any kind of fluid build up during your recovery.

Answer: Recovery time for removal of submuscular implants in a very muscular athlete? Thank you for the question. Breast implant removal surgery is a very well-tolerated procedure; it is not necessary to "cut muscle" to remove the breast implants.Generally speaking, patients report a much “easier” recovery time associated with removal of breast implants compared to the initial breast augmentation surgery. Your plastic surgeon will guide you when it comes to returning to specific activities. Generally, for my patients I ask them to limit strenuous activity for at least one month after breast implant removal. I hope this, and the attached link (with many inspiring/encouraging stories), helps. Best wishes with your upcoming procedure.
