African American female experiencing decreased length, density, and growth of hair over the past 5 years. Mostly due to traction alopecia. I've been wearing wigs and styles that haven't been tight or pull on my hair for at least a year now. I have noticed that my hair has started to re-appear slowly around the temples, edges, and nape; but, it still has not reached its full potential. It's always been naturally fine but It was much thicker and would grow really long. Now it is thinning all over.
Answer: Hair thinning in AA woman Based on your photos and description I think the best place to start would be with a thorough evaluation by a Dermatologist and/or Internist.First you want to rule out organic causes of hair loss such as thyroid disease, autoimmune disorders(Lupus),Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, severe stress, anaemia or protein/vitamin deficiency.Excluding theses causes most hair loss is due to genetic and hormonal factors,or possibly traction in your case. Most cases of traction alopecia(which are usually localized to the hairline and temple area) respond very nicely to Hair Transplantation. At that point I would recommend a consultation with an experienced Hair Restoration Surgeon.

Answer: Multifactorial Approach to Hair Restoration There needs to be a thorough History & Physical performed by a qualified physician who can determine why you are losing your hair, and what to do about it. Unfortunately, there is not a "one size fits all" treatment. Each treatment should be customized to suit your needs, and also be sure to address any possible underlying problem causing the hair loss. PRP and FUE are excellent options if you are determined to actually require them. Best of luck, Dr. Giordano

Answer: Understanding Hair loss and hair loss treatment options: hair transplant, prp and progesterone This needs an in-person evaluation. I suggest seeing a hair loss expert now to evaluate and go over your condition and provide you information about your best treatment options. Prp/progesterone and/or hair transplantation are great options. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Answer: Hair Loss Can Have Many Causes - Proper Diagnosis is Important! Women’s hair loss is much more common and often more difficult to diagnose than people think. While traction alopecia is certainly an issue that affects many women, there are also a number of other conditions that could potentially result in hair loss, ranging from hormonal imbalances to genetic predisposition. Because there are so many possible causes, and because every patient has their own individual health considerations, there is no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” hair restoration treatment. The “best option for hair regrowth” is the one that is specifically tailored to your unique needs. Judging from the photos that you have posted, I believe that platelet rich plasma could likely help, but other hair restoration treatments or even hair transplantation surgery may be required as well. I would absolutely recommend that you visit a doctor with experience treating hair loss for a comprehensive diagnosis. Understanding the underlying causes of your hair loss is the first step to developing a customized treatment plan, which may include prescription medications, red light laser therapy, platelet rich plasma, or even hair transplantation surgery as needed.
