I notice there are different techniques for PRP which technique is more affective for scarring and traction alopecia for African American woman. PRP Acell, or PRP micro needling or PRP. How do I go about finding an experienced doctor in the state of Michigan. Thanks

In my opinion, there is little difference between "plain" PRP and PRP with acell. For traction alopecia, the key factor is how long the follicle been dormant. A good evaluation by PRP expert is important. You want to rule out frontal fibrosing alopecia. We have seen excellent results with injecting "plain" PRP for traction alopecia in African Americans. Protocols vary from physician to physician. Be careful with wigs and scarves that are used to cover the area.PRPHAIRMD.COM

Prp in my opinion isn’t so effective for traction alopecia. Minoxidil and steroid injections are first line in my practice. Oral minoxidil has worked well. The key pointers are these (1) the traction forces and hairstyles must be stopped and (2) a dermatologist should exclude coexistent scarring alopecia such as CCCA. (3) In stable traction alopecia, nothing beats a hair transplant. PRP is a third line treatment in my opinion.

PRP is more of restorative therapy and degree of reversal would really depend on how advanced traction alopecia has become. If the follicles have become scarred enough, PRP unlikely to regrow cosmetically acceptable terminal hairs; however during early stages, it does have the potential for reversal. Frequency of treatment depends on the amount, type, and method of use of PRP. This is variable in various practices. Typically approximately 13ml of PRP is needed for each half of scalp. The type and kit of PRP used is also very critical. Generally treatments can be every 9-12 months with an optional booster 3 months after the initial therapy has been shown to be helpful.

it is unknown if PRP helps African-American women with traction alopecia. This is because much of the alopecia is due to scarring and so hair will not regrow when it is scarred. However, other hairs may grow actively or become thicker from PRP so this treatment may be helpful.
