6 weeks post-op. My incision site has a rash and itches. What is the possible cause? Any advice? (photos)

Question

Allergic to surgical tape so was glued (using dermabond?). Week 4 glued tape removed, ends of incision on both hip started itching and welting. Small blisters, spread to almost entire incision. Told to start moisturizing, got worse. Actual incision is fine...just alongside the top and bottom of it. PS put me on a 6day pack of prednisone and I switched from nivea to aveeno. I'm on day 4 meds now and areas seem less inflamed. Itching less intense. Any idea on why? And any advice? Thx in advance

Thank you for sharing your excellent question and photographs and I am sorry to hear of your difficulties.  Because it is found only along the incision site I would think some topical agent applied is most likely the cause - this could be an adhesive, lotion, gauze, or article of clothing.  In very rare instances patients may have a reaction to the sutures used during surgery as well.  Glad to hear that all is improving at this point so hopefully no further issues arise.  Best wishes!

It sounds like you had a reaction potentially to the adhesive or something else that was in contact with your incision.  From your description the changes you have made are improving the situation.  Continue to follow the advice of your surgeon and report any concerns.

This appearance is caused by inflammation, but it’s hard to know why just from the photo. It could be a continued skin sensitivity to something being applied, or it could be a fungal infection of the skin. Discuss this possibility with your doctor since there are prescription ointments that can help improve either situation. Best wishes.
