If you Google "toned abdomen" and look at the images presented, you may notice that the most toned tummies tend to have belly buttons that are somewhat vertical, rather than round. This is because, once the muscles are tightened beneath the skin, via exercise and/or a tummy tuck, the navel is tightly attached as well. It's often a matter of preference, and I don't go with the school that says one shape indicates a tummy tuck more than another. The goal of a tummy tuck is that the *position* of the navel is in the correct *location* and that the muscles beneath the tummy are taut, with the skin pulled down like a window shade to eliminate the excess skin and belly fat. Two fun facts: University of Missouri researchers who showed pictures of various belly button shapes to a group of men and women discovered that a small, vertical, T-shaped navel with a little flap of overlying skin was considered by the majority to be the most attractive. According to another study by Finnish scientist Aki Sinkkone, who published his hypothesis in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology in 2009, an appealing belly button may make you a more attractive mate!I've had many patients present at my Boca Raton plastic surgery practice looking for a procedure to create a more pleasing belly button, whether or not they wanted a tummy tuck along with it. The procedure is called an umbilicoplasty. Remember, a belly button is actually a scar that results when the umbilical cord is cut at birth. Like most scars, it can be changed with surgery.
