General vs. local for gynecomastia surgery?

For gynecomastia surgery which will involve gland removal and lippo, the doctor is recommending general anesthesia instead of local. He informed that the local anesthetic could present more harm as the amount needed is significant and could be toxic. Thoughts on general vs. Local?
