My doctor said I need antibiotics for teeth cleaning & pap smears after implants, why?

I am a bit worried because I get my teeth cleaned twice a year and a pap once a year, so it seems like a lot of time to be on antibiotics and I've heard they aren't the best for your body. I also don't necessarily like taking more medication than I need to and wasn't told this was necessary prior to surgery.

Because the breast implants are relatively large prosthetics, many physicians feel as if antibiotics are warranted in any procedure that may even remotely seed the bloodstream with infection. Although nobody wants to take unwarranted medications, staying on antibiotics for short periods of time, even multiple times a year, should be generally safe.

There are differing opinions on this.  The reasoning behind taking antibiotics prior to dental cleanings is to prevent infections that could lead to capsular contractions.  I encourage you to discuss this with your surgeon and make an informed decision.

As I am sure your surgeon explained, those teeth cleaning and PAP smears stir up bacteria which could potentially travel to your breasts and cause a late capsule or even an infection. Taking one dose of antibiotics prior to those procedures is safest.
