Hi I am a female in my mid-20's and I'm looking to do eyelid surgery. I was born with congenital ptosis on the left eye and had surgery on it when I was 4 years old but my parents aren't sure of the name of the surgery they just know it involved shortening the muscle. I want to have both eyes look larger and be more symmetrical. I will put a link below with pictures of my eyes. What surgery/surgeries should I have done to achieve these goals? Your ptosis surgery was performed when you could not cooperate during surgery, at age 4. Your ptosis surgeon performed your surgery under general anesthesia. Congenital ptosis surgery is directed at lifting the eyelid edge high enough that the so it does not block vision. It is not aesthetic ptosis surgery where the goal is an improved appearance. I assure you your original surgeon was concerned with both appearance and function, but for a number of reasons it is very challenging to accomplish the level of symmetry during ptosis surgery that is required for best aesthetic results. The possibility of further improving your situation will depend on how much levator function you have in the eyelids. This is measured by fixing the eye brow on one side and measuring the excursion of the eyelid margin. This is done on each side. If the excursion is above 12 mm it is highly likely that revisional ptosis surgery is worthwhile. If the excursion or levator function is below 8 mm, it is unlikely revisional surgery will be successful. You need a very detailed, in person consultation to determine if revisional surgery is right for you.
