I'm 5 weeks post rhinoplasty and the swelling is fluctuating. Is this normal?

Dear RakhidFluctuation in swelling in the first 3 months is normal. It becomes less so as time goes on. Avoid direct sun and wear sunblock even on cloudy days.

actually takes up to one full year for the nose to completely heal, but around
three to four months after the surgery the changes will be the most
obvious. Up through the four- month mark
the nasal structure will be fragile as it mends and heals. It is for this reason that all contact
sports, diving, and other potentially dangerous activities should be
avoided. After all the effort related to
your nasal surgery, you certainly do not want to undo the good work that has

This is completely normal.  The nose can swell after rhinoplasty for weeks to months, and the final appearance will take up to 1 year.  Be patient and you will slowly begin to see the results that you're hoping for.  Good luck!

A number of factors can be influencing the amount of swelling and swelling fluctuation you are experiencing. I would not worry. This should subside overtime. In the months to come you should see improvements in the appearance of your nose.All the best,

Fluctuations in swelling are common affected by total body water, positioning, and other variables. As long as the overall trend is favorable there is nothing to worry about.

It is very normal to have some fluctuation following any procedure especially in the morning. Keeping the head elevated at night will help some of this.

At 5 weeks post op, fluctuation in swelling is not a cause for concern. A variety of factors can lead to increases or decreases in swelling, especially when the area is susceptible to swelling, as it is now. At this point in your recovery, swelling that fluctuates is completely normal. It can occur with a variety of factors including:1) Diet: high sodium intake can increase swelling2) Temperature: warmer temperatures encourage swelling3) Time of day: The morning will likely be the time when the swelling is maximal from lying flat all night and should decrease throughout the day4) Exercise can transiently increase swelling due to increased blood flowAs your recovery progresses, you will notice that this happens less frequently.

Yes!  Absolutely, swelling will fluctuate for several months to a year.  The first couple of months following rhinoplasty the swelling may change from day to day.  Continue to see your surgeon for follow-up.
