Hi there. I did several consults for breast augmentation. All were with board-certified plastic surgeons. What I found is that about 75% of surgeons will limit you to implant size, based on your measurements and especially "base width" while others will essentially say "I will do ANYTHING you want. " I even had one say "I will go as big as it takes to make you happy." Is one approach better than the other?

Answer: Pick the surgeon who has an opinion Hi Anon453054, There are several physical characteristics which help to determine optimal implant size. As you correctly note, the most important is base width, or the ideal right to left distance of the implant, as it sits on the chest wall. This measurement is inherent to you, and is not something that can be changed without negatively impacting your result. specifically, an implant whose base width is too small will not completely fill out the footprint of the breast. An implant whose base width is too wide will project into the armpit, producing the dreaded "side boob". As such, I believe surgeon should suggest an implant that fits within your appropriate base width, as a produces the best long-term result. The choice is definitely up to you, but volume more cubic centimeters is not the only determining factor that your surgeon should used to make a decision with you on what is the best implant for your augmentation. Breast augmentation is a custom decision that mailed your size goals with your body type. Clearly, it is individualized to you and your goals. Hope this helps. Answer: Why do some surgeons limit your implant size while others do not? Hello, Thank you for the question. Implant size discussion and implant selection is one of the most important steps during your consultation with plastic surgeon. The decision-making process depends on your desires, as well as breast and soft tissue dimensions of your chest wall. I also utilize Vectra 3D planning to further help with implant selection. Ideally, the breast implant size should fit the chest wall dimensions for the most natural-looking and proportionate results. I would seek an in-person evaluation by the Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, in order to discuss your goals and concerns for the best cosmetic results. I hope this helps.Best regards, Dr. Karanetz Dr. Irena KaranetzBreast Fellowship-TrainedBoard Certified Plastic Surgeon
