My doctors won't remove my port because my cancer was metastatic (I beat I for now though!) and he believes that removing the port so soon after the completion of my treatment would be premature. I also received lots of Bleomycin (for stage IV Hodgkins Lymphoma) and consequently cannot receive high levels of oxygen without having problems with toxicity. Would that interfere with the procedure to have a lift and BA? PS, would I actually need to have a breast lift?
Answer: Port is ok Have your surgeon place the implants under the muscle and the port will be no where in the picture when the implants go in. The port sits on top of the muscle. If you need a lift it will be a minor one. Your left breast looks like it has more ptosis than your right. Consult with a board certified plastic surgeon and they can help you decide on the need for a lift. Also, make sure your oncologist gives you the 'ok' to have elective surgery.

Answer: Would I have to remove my power port to get a breast lift and augmentation? Congratulations on your “victory”! The port will not interfere with breast surgery. I would suggest that you time the breast procedure after you communicate your goals with the physicians who know you best. Make sure that your immune system is back to as close to “normal” as possible prior to proceeding. The levels of oxygen provided during the procedure should not be a problem. Your photographs demonstrate breasts in a “borderline” position on the chest wall; breast augmentation surgery (plus/minus a minor lift) will be all that is necessary to achieve a very nice outcome. Select your plastic surgeon carefully and communicate your goals carefully as well. Best wishes.

Answer: Breast Surgery and Port First and foremost, I commend you on your fight with cancer. I know from my breast reconstruction patients that chemo is a tough, but congratulations on getting through it. Now, to your other questions: You can still have breast surgery with a port. Your oncologist are right, it should stay. In general, you should wait six weeks or longer (sometimes up to 3mo) before surgery. You want to make sure your white blood cell is normal and you can heal/fight infection. Without an exam its difficult to say, for sure, but I am guessing you would need an augmentation and a small lift. You don't have to have the lift, but the breast will look much better (if you need one).

Answer: Lots of issues First the easy one, no, your port can stay put if you decide to have breast surgery. The harder ones are the following, chemotherapy interferes with wound healing and can increase your risk of infection. Couldn't you wait until you're done with the chemo to have your surgery? Oxygen isn't given at "high" levels for most breast cases (in fact sometimes patients even breathe room air) so that isn't as much an issue though I'd talk with your prospective anesthesia provider about it. As for the lift vs an augmentation, I'd defer that decision to a surgeon who can examine you. It appears you're borderline and given the number of issues you're dealing with, it would be helpful to see you face to face. Good luck!

Answer: Breast augmentation with port Your port will not interfere physically with the procedure. As long as your oncologist clears you for surgery and you have the surgery in an accredited center with a board certified plastic surgeon then your risk should be acceptable. A lift is questionable as it depends on what type of implant and what type of shape you are looking for. It is not mandatory.
