I'm a very healthy 5'9" and 280 pounds female but my BMI is approximately 41%. I have a lot of muscle tone. My stomach doesn't stick out or have a lot of fat. My stomach is mostly skin that hangs but looks flat under clothes. I don't look morbidly obese. Do I not qualify for a tummy tuck because of my high BMI? Thank you.
Answer: High BMI. Do I qualify for a tummy tuck? Hello, Regardless of appearance or distribution of fat and muscle, a very high BMI is associated with increased morbidity and health risks. A BMI of 41 is considered morbidly obese and is associated with a greater risk of complications after any surgery. As such it is not safe to perform elective aesthetic surgery on individuals of such elevated BMI. Once you have undergone adequate weight loss, the excess loose skin can be tucked safely. Warm regards, Dr. Pedy Ganchi Village Plastic Surgery

Answer: BMI Your safety is always our priority. For elective plastic surgery it is recommended that you have a BMI of 30 or below. Those who are above this threshold are at higher risk for complications such as seroma, infection, and poor wound healing. Lowering your BMI also gives your surgeon the opportunity to maximize your results.

Answer: High BMI. Do I qualify for a tummy tuck? There are multiple factors that qualify or disqualify patients for a tummy tuck. BMI is one of them. Most plastic surgeons have upper limits for tummy tucks below 35 because the complication rate increases as the BMI increases. That being said, tummy tucks for high BMI patients may sometimes because for medical reasons - like infections or inference with walking. As always, be sure to carefully research the doctor doing your procedure to increase the chance of having a favorable outcome.

Answer: Tummy tuck candidate Dear Hydrangea20, generally speaking, you want to reach your goal weight before you consider a tummy tuck, otherwise your results will be suboptimal if you continue to lose weight after the surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.
