Its always important to ask your surgeon what they typically recommend for their patients regarding exercise and post operative care. In my practice, I usually will recommend that patients can resume very light exercise like walking at around a week after surgery. The first few days after surgery, I do want my patients out of bed, sitting up and moving around their house, but not active. I also want patients to limit quick head turning that puts strain on their recently tightened neck muscles. I recommend no heavy lifting, head down activities like yoga, sexual activity or any aerobic active that raises the heart rate or blood pressure for the first 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, most patients can slowly return to their baseline aerobic activity. I have patients wait 4 weeks before resuming upper body and abdominal weight lifting or resistance training or yoga/pilates activity as tolerated. After any surgery its common to feel lower energy or feeling more tired at the earlier in the day than usual. Its important to listen to your body and give your body rest when needed for the first few months after surgery.
