I'm 19 weeks pregnant and I had received a vial full of dysport on the jaw muscles for face slimming during second or third week of gestation unawared that I was pregnant. I have irregular periods so the gestation was estimated by the estimated due date. Please kindly advice. It is driving me crazy. Thank you.

Answer: Dysport and Pregnancy It is likely nothing will happen, although it has not been studied in those who are pregnant. It is often that people get neuromodulation and do not know they are pregnant. So I would not have concerns at this point. Best, Dr. Emer.

Answer: Not an unheard of situation. Botulinum toxin injections are done for both medical and cosmetic reasons. We do not have research establish the safety of botulinum toxin during pregnancy. It is used medically during pregnancy for certain neurologic conditions where the benefits seem to outweigh the risks. Ethical practitioners do not feel that cosmetic indications can outweigh unknown risks to the health of the fetus. There is a small study including a few women to received cosmetic botox when they did not know that they were actually pregnant. These women has no issues with their pregnancies and no harm to their babies. So the general advice now when this happens is to not worry about it. What I would recommend is that if you are concerned about this, discuss the situation with your obstetrician. If you are still uncertain, he or she can refer you to a perinatologist for consultation.
