I am 3 month PO deep plane FL and neck. Having a hard recovery. The entire surgical field itches, burns and feels tight. These sensations move around but are constant. My surgeon said he has never had a post op patient with such severe symptoms! I need advice...is this truly abnormal at 3 mos PO? I'm worried this is all permanent!
Answer: I have rarely seen this. Usually these types of issues to resolve or improve to the point where it is no longer a significant issue. But the weird thing about these responses is that they are statistical which means that while distinctly not common, anyone can have an individual response that defy what most patients do. I would encourage you and your surgeon to consider consulting a neurologist. This is a type of dysesthesia. It is likely to resolve or improve but in the mean time, if the symptoms are sufficiently bothersome, you might benefit from treatment with antiseizure medication or even antidepressants which paradoxically can be helpful in these situations.

Answer: Nerve symptoms following surgery It’s understandable to be concerned about your recovery, especially with such persistent symptoms. While some discomfort, itching, and tightness can be normal after a deep plane facelift and neck lift, experiencing severe sensations for three months isn’t typical. Many patients do report these feelings, but they usually start to improve significantly within the first few weeks. The sensations you're experiencing could be related to nerve healing, scar tissue, or changes in the skin's elasticity. However, if your symptoms are intense and persistent, it’s important to keep communicating with your surgeon. They might consider evaluating you for any underlying issues or recommend treatments to help manage your symptoms. While it’s natural to worry about permanence, many patients do see gradual improvement over time. It might also help to seek a second opinion from another qualified surgeon or a specialist in post-operative care. Remember, you deserve to feel comfortable and informed throughout your recovery process.

Answer: Recovery Sounds like you are having some sensations related to the cutaneous nerves regenerating. I hope that your surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon (by the American Board of Plastic Surgery).

Answer: Postop Issues The first piece of advice I would like to offer you is to listen to your Surgeon and staff for guidance, who you chose for this important event in your life. Secondly, although your symptoms sound more severe than normal, it is very common to have a feeling of tightness, and itching in the first 3-4 months. This should improve over the next few months. Thirdly: You look great!
