Tummy tuck and tubes tied at same time? if not, what sequence?

If I want to get my tubes tied, can it be done during a tummy tuck by an OB- Gyn while the plastic surgeon does the tummy tuck? if it should not be done together, should i do the tube tying first and how long would you recommend waiting in between? Thanks!!

Dear Sahar,
    Thanks for your questions. I do not do Tummy tuck and Tubal ligation at the same time for 2 reasons. 1. If there are any issues or complication that come up after surgery, it is confusing in regard to who manages the patient. I like to take full responsibility of my patients' recovery , which make it simple for me. 2. I perform my surgery in my accredited surgery center and if I have to bring a gynecologist for the tubal ligation , that has to be done in the hospital where you lose your privacy and the hospital does not have the instrument that I prefer and use in my surgery center. There are other reasons too which I can explain to you at your consultation in my office.
   Your decision to do the tubal ligation first is the correct one and that would be my recommendation to you. As far as how long you have to wait for doing the tummy tuck, if you do not have any post operative issues, you can do it 2-3 weeks after surgery or when your Gynecologist clears you surgery.
   Always consult with experienced board certified plastic surgeons who operate in accredited surgery center for your safety. Most importantly check the before and after pictures in the photo gallery to make sure that they are numerous, consistent and attractive with flat stomach, narrower waists, improved body posture and nice belly button.

Yes! In the right patient, a tubal ligation can absolutely be coordinated with a tummy tuck. Your OB-Gyn would perform their portion of the procedure, followed by your plastic surgeon completing the tummy tuck. Both surgeons and the surgical facility would need to be comfortable with the combined procedure and coordinate the operative plan.
For the tummy tuck itself, I generally recommend waiting at least 6 months after your most recent pregnancy and being at a stable weight that is close to your goal weight. Since a tummy tuck is ideally performed once you are finished having children, combining it with a tubal ligation can actually make a lot of sense for the right patient.
If for some reason the procedures cannot be performed together, I would generally recommend completing the tubal procedure first and allowing yourself to fully recover before moving forward with your tummy tuck. The exact timing will depend on how the sterilization is performed and your individual recovery.
I would recommend meeting with both a board-certified plastic surgeon and your OB-Gyn to discuss your goals. They can determine whether combining the procedures is a safe and appropriate option for you!

Yes, in selected patients, a tummy tuck and tubal ligation can sometimes be done during the same anesthesia, with an OB-Gyn and plastic surgeon coordinating the case.
The main issues are safety, operative time, infection risk, bleeding risk, blood clot risk, and whether both surgeons can work through compatible incisions. A laparoscopic tubal ligation is often easier to coordinate than a more complex gynecologic procedure.
If the procedures are not done together, many surgeons would prefer doing the tubal ligation first, then waiting until you are fully healed before the tummy tuck. A common waiting period is around 6 to 12 weeks, but this depends on how the tubal ligation is performed and whether there are any complications.
Doing the tummy tuck first and then having another abdominal/pelvic procedure soon after can be less ideal, because it may disturb the healing abdominal wall or scars. If pregnancy prevention is important before the tummy tuck, handling the tubal ligation first can also give peace of mind.
My advice would be to have your OB-Gyn and plastic surgeon speak directly before scheduling. Ask whether it can be done laparoscopically, how long the combined surgery would take, what the blood clot prevention plan is, and whether staging would be safer in your specific case.

If you want to do them separately I would recommend doing the tubal ligation first. The reason is that at the time of tubal ligation the abdomen is inflated. If a tummy tuck is done first then it could damage the repair. However, I do them simultaneously. I open the abdomen for the tummy tuck and then the OB/GYN goes through the fascia only with an endoscope and performs the tubal ligation. After that, I continue with the tummy tuck and complete the repair. They can be done separately or together.

Short answer is "no problem."  I've done these before and I DO like to guide the OB-Gyn on where to put the incision so we can keep the belly button out of their operation so it looks natural and heals well.
