I've seen conflicting opinions: what is the truth? 4 views: (1) saline volume doesn't include shell; (2) saline look bigger due to overfill; (3) silicone conforms to chest wall more, making it look smaller by 50ccs or so; (4) no difference. My current implants are 275cc 12.3cm diam, 3.7cm proj. My choices based on similar/slightly greater width are (Natrelle) vol 300-330 proj 3.3-3.6cm (low/mod) OR vol 330-370 proj 4.0-4.2cm (mod/mod+). Which is more equivalent? I don't want more projection.

Answer: Breast Implant Size Thanks for your question. The volume of a silicone implant includes the shell and the fill so a 300cc implant would be a total volume of 300cc. A saline implant only considers the size of the fill so a 300 cc saline implant would have a total volume of 300cc plus 30cc for the shell. The Ideal Breast Implant Volume includes the shell, so again a 300cc implant would be 300cc. Another factor is the profile of your current implants. Both base diameter and projection need to be assessed. As you add more fill to a saline implant the base diameter decreases and the projection increases, so you also need to determine if your original implants were overfilled or not. Discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon. You should have more options than the 2 you list.

Answer: Saline vs silicone Saline and silicone implant volumes are the same. The differences are mainly in the shape of the implant depending upon their profiles.
