Continuation of the miraDry underarm sweat reduction study in Canada now shows that results are stable for 3 years. Since the number of sweat glands in our body don't increase after puberty, and the underarm glands are eliminated by miraDry, the expectation is that the results will last well beyond 3 years. MiraDry has been a very effective tool for eliminating underarm hyperhidrosis in our patients at SkinCare Physicians in Boston. Success rates are high, with national data trending over 95%, with similar results in the clinical trials.
A lot of physicians who have not done miraDry seem to make comments about the procedure. MiraDry is a relatively new procedure but there is clinical data from outside the US shows that it is a lasting procedure. Nobody can tell you if it will continue to work in 8, 10 or 20 years (because it hasnt been out that long), but, in our practice, if it works (> 95% chance), it continues to be effective. We don't do sympathectomy in our practice anymore for isolated underarm sweating. We stopped doing suction curettage for underarm sweating. miraDry is the preferred treatment in our practice for patients who don't want to come back for more procedures like Botox every 3 months.
