Hello Doctors, I currently have an infected nasal 3mm silicone implant. According to my PS, the implant may be replaced with rib cartilage within the same operation only if there appears to be a low-grade infection. Is this possible? In addition, I had ear cartilage added to my tip. Is it mandatory for the cartilage to be removed or can it stay? Lastly, what is the recovery time from an implant removal? I really wish to keep my look the same. Many thanks for your expertise in advance.

Answer: Rib cartilage in rhinoplasty It is very common to remove infected implants and replace the volume with rib cartilage. Using autologous tissue such as this will reduce the likelihood that it would also become infected. The cartilage that was placed in the initial surgery may be removed, cleaned and replaced as necessary - although a rib harvest should supply more than enough new cartilage. I recommend seeking out a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who will accurately examine your nose and formulate a plan tailored to your needs and wishes. Good luck!

Answer: Nasal dorsal reconstruction You are receiving good advice from other surgeons on this page. In the face of a cultured infection remove the silicone. It will be your surgeon's decision perhaps with the consultation of an infectious disease specialist as to how long before re-operation. Diced cartilage in temporal is fascia would be the preferred method for many experienced rhinoplasty surgeons for reconstruction due to its relatively low complication rate. If the old tip cartilage graft appears involved in the infectious process remove it or it will protract the healing process. This is a good opportunity to get a nose that will be 100% you
