How do I know when my face is done growing?

I have heard many times that you should wait to get nose surgery (a septorhinoplasty in my case) until you are done growing. How do I know if I am done growing. What are some signs to look for?

Facial growth is gender-specific, as women usually finish by their later teen years, and men can take into their early 20s.  We usually recommend performing a rhinoplasty after the age of 18, as the facial growth has begun to slow down.  I recommend seeking out a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who will accurately examine your nose, create a simulation that will show you what your nose COULD look like after surgery, and formulate a plan tailored to your needs and wishes. Facial maturity for girls can often be seen by age 15 or 16. For boys it might be closer to 18. Your best advice is to seek a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon or ENT experienced in nasal surgery to find out how you can best be helped. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your question.It is difficult to say the exact age at which the facial skeleton will stop growing completely. When you see no change in size or shape in your picture for a year or two you can safely assume that your growth is mostly done (if you are in your late teens). All The Best.

In general, it is best for women to wait until they are about 15 or 16 and for men to wait until they are about 17 or 18 before undergoing rhinoplasty.

women are usually done growing by age 18; men will grow until they are 21. If it's been two years since you changed your shoe size, you are probably done growing. Men, in particular, should be cautious about having a nose reduction too young. The jaw on a male grows up to age 21 and can balance a large nose, or overpower a weak and overly reduced nose.

In my practice, it is not uncommon for teens to have Rhinoplasty surgery.  A good time for many is during a transition period, such as between high school and college.  Other popular times are holiday breaks.  Talk to your parents about your concerns, so they can schedule a consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for an exam.  Best to you!
