Should I be worried about Volbella lips injections done before I found out I was pregnant?

Although it is not recommended that women get cosmetic procedures while pregnant, almost all procedures have not been studied in clinical trials on pregnant women so we do not know if it is safe. If you do move forward with treatments, you do so at your own risk. However, I have had many women do injectables like Juvederm/Restylane/Belotero/Prollineum Versa/Radiesse and Botox/Dysport/Xeomin without any issues. Peels, lasers, and skin care should all be safe as they do not penetrate into the systemic system. It is advised not to use topical vitamin A producs/retinols or of course not oral spironolactone or isotretinoin. But if you chose to get a cosmetic treatment while pregnanty you will do so at your own risk/chance. Most of my patients to skin care, peels, and facials and advoid lasers except for Aerolase/Laser Genesis and Clear and Brilliant or Venus Viva nanofractional RF, red/blue Light Stim, and injectables. Hi, thank you for your question. The reason why fillers or even Botox treatments are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding is because there are no studies that prove it is safe. No studies prove these treatments are harmful during pregnancy/breastfeeding either so we avoid them because we don’t want to take that risk. That being said, it happens quite often in my practice and in my colleagues’ practice that a woman gets a treatment done (Botox and/or fillers) and then finds out she was pregnant and I have never heard of complications. All of these women I have treated or who have been treated by colleagues ended up having healthy babies. Obviously, we recommend not doing it on purpose because of the lack of studies but if it happened while you weren’t aware you were pregnant yet, I would not worry. Volbella is made of hyaluronic acid, a molecule that you already have in your body. Don’t worry about that treatment, but I would still recommend avoiding other treatments until you are done breastfeeding if you do. Best of luck!

I think you can relax.  Providers generally don't inject pregnant women because we would just rather wait to inject you when you're not pregnant because we just don't know if there are any effects. However, filler done correctly usually doesn't move from the area it was placed and shouldn't cause any harm to your baby.  If you didn't have any problems with the filler after injection, you should be just fine. Fillers such as Volbella are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that is also naturally produced by our bodies.  All that being said, your obstetrician is always the first person you should go to when you have concerns, and I recommend you speak with him or her about your injections.  And since were on the subject, Accutane and Retin-A should definitely be avoided during pregnancy!
