First and foremost to make a quality assessment regarding the outcome of a plastic surgery procedure, we always need to see a complete set of proper before and after pictures. If you don’t have before, and after pictures, then ask your surgeon to forward the pictures they took. Most plastic surgeons, recommend waiting six months before doing revision surgery but considering how difficult it is to find plastic surgeons who have sufficient skill and experience it’s not a bad idea to start the process early. Delivering consistent quality, Liposuction results turn out to be more difficult than most people realize. The number of plastic surgeons who mastered this procedure is pretty low. Correcting poorly done, Liposuction is many times more difficult than primary Liposuction, and only some improvements may be possible. The amount of improvement possible depends on how the procedure was done initially. The most difficult cases are from when the first procedure was done aggressively, removing most of the fat and leaving the fat layer uneven. All people have body, asymmetry, and asymmetry is primarily determined by skeletal structure, and should not be corrected by Liposuction. Attempting to correct skeletal based a symmetry by purposely removing more fat on one side, simply creates two separate a symmetries. To find the right provider I suggest patient scheduled multiple in person consultations. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up your portfolio and show you the entire collection of before and after pictures of previous patients who have similar body characteristics to your own. And experience provider should have no difficulty showing you the before and after pictures of at least 50 previous patients. Being shown a handful of pre-selected images, representing only the best results of a providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of what average results look like in the hands of each provider, what your results are likely to look like, or how many of these procedures they’ve actually done. Being bored, certified in plastic surgery with years of experience in an overall good reputation does not mean somebody has mastered any single procedure especially not Liposuction. There’s no correct number of consultations needed to find the right provider. The more consultations you have the more likely you are to find the best provider for your needs. The biggest mistake patients make is having only one consultation, which pretty much eliminates the ability to choose the better provider. Single procedure especially not Liposuction. Recognize that revision work is many times more complex, and technically difficult than primary Liposuction and things can easily be made worse with any attempt at revision work, unless you’re in the hands of someone who is truly mastered this procedure. Correcting outcomes also are highly dependent on the persons candidacy for the procedure in the first place. We need to see before pictures to understand what your candidacy was for Liposuction in the first place. Individuals for less than ideal candidates for Liposuction, are those who are older, Have skin laxity, pregnancy, related changes, or other things not related directly to fat distribution. I generally recommend people avoid virtual, consultations and schedule in person consultations whenever possible. I also recommend people avoid traveling long distances for elective surgical procedures, if at all possible. Best, Matt Hagstrom, MD
