Getting rhinoplasty, scared I won't wake up? What's the chance of dying during this procedure?

Dear Laurenamybaker,The chances of death or complications during anesthesia are very very slim. Keep in mind that a board certified facial plastic surgeon is accompanied by an anesthesiologist whose sole purpose is to monitor your heath while you are sedated.

In the appropriately selected patient (i.e. young, healthy, no medical comorbidities), the chances of dying during a rhinoplasty is extremely low.  Your surgeon will tell you if there are any concerns, so relay your fears to him or her.  Good luck!

The chances of a healthy, 22 year old dying during a rhinoplasty procedure are very, very slim.  I would discuss your concern with your surgeon however, as he or she should be able to address your fears in more detail.  You may also want to speak with your anesthesiologist beforehand to help alleviate your concerns.  

 In our practice, we perform rhinoplasty surgery under general anesthesia in a certified and licensed outpatient surgery center. Board certified physician anesthesiologists administer the anesthesia for patient safety and comfort. As long as you are in good health, the chance of dying under anesthesia is exceedingly rare

Dear Laurenamybaker, I would speak with your anesthesiologist to help ease your mind before undergoing your procedure. The anesthetics used today are very safe when provided by an anesthesia specialist in a certified fully accredited hospital or operating facility. This ensures that the staff is properly trained in all emergency procedures and that all necessary medications are available to provide a safe experience for patients. The fact that you have undergone surgery before with no complications and you are a healthy young lady I would not concern yourself and prepare for a nice nap on the table. The chances of dying after rhinoplasty is about less than 1 in 10,000. A real number but includes people who are not healthy. You need a good anesthesiologist. Most fatalities are from anesthetic complications. 

It is very safe having Anesthesia for a rhinoplasty in a reputable surgery center with a reputable medical staff.  I would discuss your concerns with your surgeon and speak with the Anesthesia personnel.   Best

The chance of something bad happening due to the anesthesia in a healthy young person is much less likely than the chance of something bad happening during the drive to the surgery.
