Having diabetes in itself is not an issue and does not cause any significant increase risk with surgical procedures. Having a long history of poorly controlled blood sugar on the other hand does lead to tissue damage in particular vascular injuries was people had increased risk for having potentially life-threatening complications that can be correlated with elective surgery. From what you describe assessing if you're a good candidate based on aesthetic criteria is probably more important than your diabetes in regards to making a decision if this is a good procedure for you. As a general statement someone who is a great candidate for a BBL is both a good candidate for fat transfer and liposuction. Great candidates tend to have tight skin, moderate amounts of excess fat in undesirable areas could benefit from gluteal volume. People who have skin laxity, muscle separation from previous pregnancies, excess intra-abdominal fat, very low BMI or obesity above 200 pounds tend to not do well with this procedure. Talk to your primary care doctor about your diabetes and elective surgery. Your plastic surgeon may want a medical clearance from your primary care doctor or an internist. Having diabetes isn't necessarily a problem but poorly controlled diabetes is a very big problem that has severe implications. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
