I've got a weak chin and recessed lower jaw. Do I need to have x-rays done to tell what the best things to do would be? What type of doctor should I see?
Answer: Sliding genioplasty You would benefit from seeing a surgeon who specialises in this type of surgery for a recessed jaw or you could benefit from seeing an osteopathist. This situation could be addressed with a chin implant or sliding genioplasty.

Answer: Multidimensional osseous augmentation genioplasty Your wishes are feasible and realistic, you seek and indeed would benefit from a two dimensional augmentation genioplasty with bone supply, so that your chin increases anteriorly and also vertically; eventually and if indicated and you wished so (very commonly done in males) we could also add a bit of horizontal widening. I strongly advise you against fillers (very dangerous), chin implants (your goals unfeasible with them and associated with a large list of major complications and undesireable effects) or simple sliding genioplasties (a conceptual error: a sliding genioplasty IS NOT indicated for microgenia or small chins but for weak receded chins in which ONLY projection is sought; you are a case for chin augmentation, a sliding genioplasty is safe, beneficial and simple technically but not for you). Very few surgeons do have experience in multidimensional genioplasties to either augment or decrease the chin area in one, two or more spacial axis; the case of males seeking multidimensional chin augmentation is pretty common in my office, and the amount of increase is virtually unlimited; the bone supply grafted is normally harvested from the elbow or alteranively, should the case require a lot of bone or the elbow be too slim, from the iliac bone (hip). The procedure is done inside the mouth without visible external facial scars, and evidently requires a very very meticulous preop plannin on cephalometric Xrays and thorough discussion and illustrations with the patient in the office. It is a safe procedure, taking (for augmentations) 3-4 hours depending the complexity and the final assembly, requires great experience, fine skills, mental ability to model 3D, training and a great does of creativity. I am doing such genioplasties many decades ago with great satisfaction in my patients. If you wish better grounded opinion well lit, focused and standard images have to be assessed: frontal, both lateral and both oblique views. Feel free to request any additional information from me.

Answer: Sliding Genioplasty As has been pointed out to you in the past, your very short chin is best treated by a sliding genioplasty first. Get the chin bone in a better anatomic position and then determine if any additional chin augmentation efforts are needed.

Answer: Would I benefit from sliding genioplasty? A sliding genioplasty is performed by an oral surgeon under general anesthesia in a hospital setting with an overnight hospital stay, and is much more invasive. This procedure is usually performed when the teeth are significantly out alignment. Chin implants are placed for patients to want a simple cosmetic augmentation to the chin when it is recessive. Chin implants are performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure which takes approximately 30 minutes. For more information about chin implants, diagrams of the implants themselves, and many before-and-after examples, please see the link and the video below
