Even after the first day, it did not appear to me that enough hair was transplanted to deal with the recession. I was told by the doctor that some of the hairs that were transplanted will not be visible and were not visible right after the transplant as some were just the follicles with no visible hairs attached when transplanted. He said these would grow hair. Does that sound right or should I have seen evidence of where the transplanted hairline would be right after surgery and in first days afterwards?

Assuming your healing process was normal and your doctor hasn't specified otherwise, there should be no problem with blow drying your hair or using hairspray after two weeks. In general, at this point you can do whatever you'd normally do to your hair, except use a razor or dye it.
The cost of hair transplant surgery differs from doctor to doctor / from clinic to clinic. It is best you see different doctors for consultation and varying fees in your area.
