Could PMS adversely affect Rhinoplasty healing progress? Will it occur every month for a year?

Question

I had my open rhinoplasty 5 weeks ago, and the swelling had been abating in a linear manner. It was wonderful! However, at this time I am experiencing PMS symptoms such as water retention and acne, but now these issues aren't as manageable as they had been for me in the past. My nose is suddenly appreciably oily and very puffy. Sexy. I am expecting my period any day now.

During the premenstrual period the body retains water and it can contribute to the nasal swelling. However it is temporary and is of no concern. The oily skin of the nose or mild acne break out or flakes and gentle peeling is all part of normal healing after a rhinoplasty and not necessarily related to menstruation. It can be helpful to reduce salt intake, use warm compresses and gentle massage on the nose to get rid of the swelling a little faster. Sleeping with head elevated will help as well. RegardsDr.J

Dear EsmeA,

Open rhinoplasty procedures are inherently characterized by
post-operative swelling and fullness. 
The monthly menstrual cycle is also characterized by water retention and
swelling and I’ve certainly seen that premenstrual syndrome can affect swelling
following rhinoplasty, facelift surgery, even Botox and fillers.  Do not be alarmed, the temporary additional
swelling caused by your menstrual cycle will resolve and open rhinoplasty often
takes up to one year to the nasal tip anatomy and aesthetic enhancement is
fully visualized.

At this point in time focus on the things that you can
control such as PMS symptoms and the acne eruptions that occur.

Over time I think your aesthetic nasal facial results will
become apparent.There should be no permanent compromise with the swelling and
puffiness that occur with your menstrual cycle and the normal wound healing
process of an open rhinoplasty.

unlikely--- but we don't really know. Five weeks after rhinoplasty is extremely early and any of the symptoms which you describe could just be due to postsurgical swelling. The recovery from rhinoplasty is a lengthy one and you need to be fairly patient. Things may improve when your period arrives.
