I have been approved for coverage for breast augmentation to correct tuberous breasts & have a date set. My PS has performed said surgery before but I'm finding it difficult to see other PS's who specialize/have a lot of experience with this surgery because they are not OHIP friendly/a little more expensive/find it bizarre that OHIP is will cover it. Im curious if there are any PS's who have performed this surgery & are very familiar with it in the region I'm in & done it with OHIP.

Answer: OHIP coverage Dear ellamont, It is unusual in the modern era for OHIP to cover tuberous breast deformity. Even though there is a significant stigma and physical disproportion, OHIP generally does not cover tuberous breasts and droopy breasts or even moderately enlarged breasts. The fact that you got OHIP approval is excellent and that you have a plastic surgeon who is willing to perform the procedure is good. Most plastic surgeons will find the compensation from tuberous breast deformity through OHIP unacceptable compensation for the amount of surgical difficulty required and, as such, will not submit this for reconstructive rather than aesthetic consideration. Reconstructive plastic surgeons may find your tuberous breast phenotype more reconstructive in nature. I wish you the best of luck for this aesthetically concerning phenotype and I am sure you will get an excellent result. R. Stephen Mulholland, M.D. Certified Plastic Surgeon Yorkville, Toronto
